Celebrating the Stevenson Connection
It’s hard to believe fall is already upon us. It seems like just yesterday we were bidding farewell to the Class of 2026, and now school is back in session and a new year is underway.
It was a whirlwind summer here at Stevenson. We welcomed back Jalen Brunson '15 following his NBA championship, celebrated our Stevenson to College Scholars, saw the Chicago Bears come to SHS, and welcomed a handful of alumni to the ranks Stevenson faculty and staff.
In the weeks ahead, we’ll welcome alumni and retirees back to campus for our annual Alumni Homecoming Celebration on October 2. Seven classes will celebrate milestone reunions, and athletics will honor the newest inductees into its Hall of Fame.
I’m looking forward to seeing many familiar faces back at SHS and celebrating all that makes the Stevenson community so special.

Alumnus Receives Young Leadership Award
Marc Karlinsky '08 has been named a recipient of the 2026 Davis, Gidwitz, & Glasser Young Leadership Award from the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago. The award, which Marc will receive on September 10, recognizes his volunteer leadership in government affairs and communications on behalf of Chicago's Jewish community. A former legal and legislative journalist, Marc now works in marketing at J.P. Morgan.

Six Alumni Among Stevenson's Newest Faculty & Staff
Earlier this month, the Stevenson Foundation hosted its annual luncheon, welcoming Stevenson's newest faculty and staff members. Among the group were six graduates, including Ashley Anderson ’21 (Communication Arts), Zachary Glim ’03 (Dean of Students), Jake Landry ’16 (Science), Sophie Lichtenstein ’21 (Applied Arts), Marisol Lopez ’22 (Multilingual Learning/ELL), and John Rammel ’07 (Special Education).

Alumna Represents Chicago at International Festival
Earlier this month, Fiona Gaffney ’17 represented Chicago at the renowned Rose of Tralee International Festival in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland. One of Ireland’s best-known cultural festivals, the Rose of Tralee celebrates women of Irish heritage for their leadership, accomplishments, and community involvement. Chicago was one of five U.S. cities represented in this year’s international competition. A resident of Roscoe Village, Fiona is currently completing her master's in public health and training for the Chicago Marathon.

Calling all graduates from the classes of 1986, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2016 -- your milestone reunion celebration is just a month away! Alumni Homecoming Celebration is October 2 -- Register Now!
All graduates are invited to join us on Friday, October 2, for the Alumni Homecoming Celebration! Gather at the Alumni Pavilion to reconnect with classmates and cheer on the Patriots.
The Alumni Association will provide complimentary pretzel bites and our own Stevenson souvenir root beer. Other refreshments will be available for purchase, including burgers, hot dogs, and local offerings from Fat Rosie's, Lou Malnati's, and Culver's.
Admission is $5 per person. All guests must be accompanied by an alumnus. Register now to secure your spot and save time at check-in!

Summer Celebration Recognizes Stevenson to College Scholars' Journeys to and Through College
Last month, Stevenson to College (S2C) community members gathered with family, friends, and mentors for the program’s annual S2C Summer Celebration.
The event recognizes the determination of S2C Scholars and the tireless guidance of volunteer mentors who help them navigate their journey to and through higher education.
A highlight of the evening was hearing from special guest and S2C Summit Scholar Christian Vazquez ’21, who shared how S2C helped shape his path and prepare him for both college and his professional career.

Chicago Bears Hold Training Camp Walk-Through at Stevenson
Stevenson was proud to welcome the Chicago Bears to campus on August 10 for Varsity Bears, a special public practice that brought the team’s 2026 Training Camp experience to SHS. Thousands of fans filled the stadium to watch the Bears hold a walk-through practice and get an up-close look at the team as it prepares for the upcoming season.
The event also had a special connection to Stevenson Athletics Director D’Wayne Bates, who was selected by the Bears in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft out of Northwestern. Bates appeared in 23 games over three seasons with Chicago before finishing his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings. At Northwestern, he played on Big Ten championship teams in 1995 and 1996 and was named first-team All-Big Ten in 1996 and 1998. His Northwestern records for career receptions (210) and receiving yards (3,370) still stand.
The sold-out event also featured football activities, food and refreshments, Bears merchandise, an appearance by Staley Da Bear, and entertainment from Stevenson’s Patriots gameday squad.

The Alumni Association is saddened to share the passing of Stevenson staff member Brian Oberhauser on July 16, 2026.
Since 2013, Brian served as a member of the summer school team and Student Learning Programs supporting the Social Studies Division. He was also a passionate club advisor for Scholastic Bowl, Mock Trial, and Investment and Financial Literacy Club. Earlier this spring, he supported SHS Scholastic Bowl students to a national championship in Atlanta.
Outside of his professional role, Brian was known for his love of travel, World History and civics.
